Location: Maynard, MA; Near Fowler School
The great American Elm was largely wiped out by Dutch elm disease during the 20th century, leaving about 1 in 100,000 alive. It was neat to find this relatively young but thriving tree, which is either lucky enough to have not been exposed to Dutch elm disease or is disease resistant. Elms are recognizable for their vase-like shape, distinct leaves and weaved bark pattern.
